Senate’s Stamp: 11 Supreme Court Judges Confirmed

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of 11 Supreme Court justices appointed by President Bola Tinubu to fill the vacancies at the apex court.
The committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters confirmed the report after careful consideration.
The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Mohammed Monguno, while presenting the report, said that the nomination and appointment satisfied the constitutional provision of section 231 (3), which states that an individual needs 15 years’ experience on the bar to be qualified for the Supreme Court justice.
He said that the committee members were satisfied with the nomination of justices and recommended their confirmation.
Some lawmakers expressed concern over the delay in appointing Supreme Court justices, while commending President Tinubu for adhering to the principle of federal character in the appointments.
The immediate past Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, urged the National Assembly and the Presidency to improve the funding of the judiciary.
The appointment of Supreme Court justices was recommended by the National Judicial Council (NJC) to fill vacant positions as a result of the deaths and resignations of some Justices of the Apex Court.
In similar development, the Senate confirmed the appointment of Olayinka Oladunjoye as the Federal Commissioner representing Lagos State in the National Population Commission (NPC)
The Senate adjourned plenary until December 29, after which the lawmakers will return after the Christmas holiday to consider and pass the 2024 appropriation bill.
