Mali Arrests Dozens of Soldiers Over Alleged Plot to Oust Junta

Mali’s military authorities have detained dozens of soldiers accused of attempting to overthrow the ruling junta, sources told AFP on Sunday. The junta itself seized power in the West African nation through coups in 2020 and 2021.
According to a Malian security source, the arrests began three days ago in connection with what was described as an effort to undermine state institutions.
“Since three days ago, there have been arrests linked to an attempt to destabilise the institutions. There have been at least around 20 arrests,” the source said.
A separate army source confirmed the development, stating:
“We have gone ahead with the necessary arrests.”
One of those taken into custody is General Abass Dembele, a respected officer and former governor of the central Mopti region.
“Soldiers came early this morning (Sunday) to arrest General Abass Dembele in Kati,” said a person close to the officer, referring to a town on the outskirts of the capital, Bamako. “They have not told him why he was arrested.”
A member of the junta-backed National Transition Council claimed the number of arrests could be far higher.
“All are soldiers. Their objective was to overthrow the junta,” the lawmaker said, putting the figure at “around 50 arrests.”
Mali has been in turmoil since 2012, battling Islamist militants linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group, alongside widespread criminal and sectarian violence. The economy has also been battered.
Following its takeover, the junta cut ties with France and strengthened relations with Russia. Fighters from the Wagner Group, now operating under the Africa Corps banner, have been deployed to assist the Malian army in combating insurgents. However, both the military and its Russian allies face frequent accusations of atrocities against civilians.
Malian sociologist Oumar Maiga believes the wave of arrests reflects cracks within the armed forces.
“Proof that the officers are struggling to control the situation. There are grumblings within the army’s ranks,” he said. “Some soldiers are not happy with the treatment given to the Russian mercenaries at the expense of Malian soldiers.”
Last month, the junta-controlled legislature passed a bill granting military leader General Assimi Goita a five-year presidential term — renewable indefinitely and without elections. The government had earlier promised a return to civilian rule by March 2024.
