Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly will resume their duties on September 18, when the state of emergency in the state comes to an end.

Wike made this statement on Saturday after casting his vote in the ongoing local government election at polling unit 7, ward 9 in Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

The former governor praised the conduct of the election, describing it as peaceful and well-organized, with election materials arriving on time.

He explained that the poll was necessary to avoid a leadership vacuum at the grassroots level once the emergency rule expires.

“What this election means—and you know by the 18th of September that state of emergency will expire—the governor and the state house of assembly will come back to their jobs,” Wike said. “Remember that the Supreme Court had nullified the other election, and if this election was not conducted, it means there would be no governance at the grassroots level.”
