WAFCON Clash Looms as South Africa Set Up Semi-Final Showdown with Nigeria

South Africa have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations—and waiting for them is a familiar rival: Nigeria. The two continental giants will face off at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.
In a tense quarter-final encounter on Saturday, Banyana Banyana edged past Senegal 4-1 on penalties after both regulation and extra time ended goalless.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has left Abuja for Ijebu-Ode to attend the eighth-day prayer ceremony for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona,” he wrote.
Nigeria, on the other hand, had already secured their semi-final spot a day earlier with a commanding 5-0 victory over Zambia’s Copper Queens, maintaining their flawless run in the tournament.
With the quarter-finals wrapped up, focus now turns to the eagerly anticipated semi-final matchups, headlined by the clash between Nigeria and South Africa.
The two teams last met at the 2022 edition of the tournament—also held in Morocco—where South Africa stunned the then-reigning champions Nigeria with a 2-1 victory. That win came just three years after Banyana Banyana’s painful loss to the Super Falcons in the WAFCON final.
Heading into Tuesday’s battle, Nigeria remain unbeaten and have yet to concede a single goal in their four outings, having scored eight times—a clear sign of their solid form and defensive discipline.
The second semi-final will see Ghana’s Black Queens take on the host nation, Morocco. Both matches are set to light up the same day.
