US to investigate foreign aid to Nigeria

The United States Mission to Nigeria has announced that the U.S. government will investigate how past aid allocated to Nigeria and other countries has been utilized.
This follows President Donald Trump’s decision on January 20, 2025, to suspend all foreign aid for 90 days, citing concerns about global destabilization and misalignment with American interests.
The move has intensified calls for a comprehensive review of U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) health funds and other aid expenditures.
In a statement on its verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Tuesday, the U.S. Mission to Nigeria confirmed ongoing efforts to track and evaluate past assistance provided by the U.S. government.
“Comprehensive monitoring and evaluation systems are in place to help verify that U.S. assistance reaches intended recipients,” the mission stated.
The US Mission also condemned the ongoing violence in Nigeria, particularly attacks by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups.
“The United States condemns the violence and blatant disregard for human life perpetrated by Boko Haram and other terrorist groups in Nigeria and the region,” the statement read.
The US government reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with Nigeria and regional partners to combat terrorism and enhance security in West Africa.
