Turji Must Back Peace Talks With Action — Sokoto Security Adviser

The Security Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor, Col Ahmed Usman (retd), has urged notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, to demonstrate genuine commitment to peace by immediately halting all attacks on communities and unconditionally releasing victims held in captivity.
Usman’s appeal came in response to an audio message circulating on social media, in which Turji expressed a willingness to embrace dialogue and called on other bandit leaders to do the same.
While acknowledging the statement as a potential step in the right direction, Usman emphasized that words alone would not suffice.
“If Turji is genuinely committed to peace, he must prove it by stopping all forms of violence and releasing innocent civilians being held captive,” the retired colonel stated.
He stressed that the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu prioritizes the safety and welfare of rural populations, adding that meaningful negotiations cannot take place while communities remain under threat.
“There can be no true dialogue while communities continue to live in fear and captivity. Peace begins with concrete steps that build trust,” he said.
Usman reiterated the state government’s readiness to support any credible initiative aimed at restoring peace, but warned that criminal acts disguised as peace overtures would not be tolerated.
He also called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to rally around efforts to bring an end to the violence.
“This is a chance to end the suffering. Let it begin with the safe return of all abducted individuals,” Usman urged.
He encouraged Turji and his group to embrace a path of true reconciliation and non-violence.
