Trump Signs Federal Law Banning ‘Revenge Porn,’ Including AI-Generated Deepfakes

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed the Take It Down Act, a new federal law that criminalizes the distribution of so-called “revenge porn,” including images generated using artificial intelligence.
The legislation, signed Monday, makes it a federal offense to publish intimate images of a person without their consent and requires social media platforms to take down such content within 48 hours of a victim’s request. It covers both authentic photos and AI-generated deepfakes that closely resemble real individuals.
“With the rise of AI image generation, countless women have been harassed with deepfakes and other explicit images distributed against their will,” Trump said during the signing ceremony at the White House. “This is wrong — just so horribly wrong. It’s a very abusive situation … and today we’re making it totally illegal.”
The bill passed Congress earlier this year with near-unanimous bipartisan support. First Lady Melania Trump, who championed the bill following her husband’s return to office, called the law “a powerful step forward in our efforts to ensure that every American, especially young people, can feel better protected from their image or identity being abused.”
Despite widespread support from anti-harassment and women’s advocacy groups, the legislation has drawn criticism from some digital rights organizations, which argue it could pose risks to free expression and online privacy.
