Tragedy Strikes as 20 Kano Contingent Members Die in Fatal Crash After National Sports Festival

Tragedy struck on Saturday as 20 members of the Kano State contingent lost their lives in a devastating auto crash while returning from the just-concluded National Sports Festival (NSF) held in Ogun State.
The fatal accident occurred in Dakatsalle town, about 50 kilometers from Kano city, when the vehicle conveying the athletes and officials crashed.
Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State chapter, Zahraddeen Saleh, confirmed the heartbreaking incident, stating that the victims included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and sports administrators.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, also confirmed the tragedy in an official statement issued to the press. He said those injured in the crash were receiving treatment and responding well.
Kwankwaso expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a dark day for Kano State and the entire sporting community.
“On behalf of the Kano State Government and the good people of the state, I extend heartfelt sympathies to the affected athletes, officials, and their families,” the statement read. “This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment.”
The Commissioner added that the government would ensure all necessary medical support is provided to the survivors and promised a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
He also commended the efforts of first responders and medical personnel who swiftly attended to the victims and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its athletes and officials during national and international sporting events.
The tragic loss has plunged Kano State into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across the country in honor of those who died while serving their state.
