Tinubu Promises Super Falcons Grand Reception After Historic 10TH WAFCON Title

President Bola Tinubu has pledged a befitting national celebration for Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their dramatic comeback victory over hosts Morocco to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title — a record-extending 10th continental triumph.
Playing at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Saturday night, the Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit to beat Morocco 3-2 in a stunning second-half resurgence.
The host nation took control early, with tournament top scorer Ghizlane Chebbak opening the scoring in the 12th minute before Sanaâ Mssoudy added another in the 24th minute. But Nigeria refused to go down without a fight.
Esther Okoronkwo reignited hopes with a penalty conversion in the 64th minute, before setting up Folasade Ijamilusi’s equaliser just seven minutes later. Then, with just two minutes of regular time left, Jennifer Echegini completed the turnaround by slotting in a perfectly placed free kick delivered by Okoronkwo.
In a video call shortly after the match, President Tinubu congratulated the players, coaching crew, and team officials, praising their resilience and determination.
“As a team, we are very proud of you; the entire nation is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy,” the President said.
“You will be celebrated, and I congratulate all the coaches and the management of the team, including the ministers and officials. To set the record of victories for the 10th time is not a small feat for the country and the continent as a whole. Safe journey back home, enjoy yourselves and avoid injuries.”
Responding during the call, team captain Rasheedat Ajibade thanked the President for approving their bonuses and assured him the trophy would be presented in Abuja. Tinubu replied, “Good, I am looking forward to that.”
In an earlier statement signed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President hailed the team’s victory as “a testament to the resilience and fighting spirit of Nigerians.”
“The Super Falcons’ spectacular performance tonight in Rabat, coming from behind to beat a spirited Moroccan side playing in front of a passionate home crowd, exemplifies the determination that defines the Nigerian spirit,” the statement read.
“With hard work, dedication, and tenacity, you have achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for. The nation looks forward to welcoming our champions. Congratulations! Nigeria celebrates you.”
The Super Falcons’ latest title adds to their previous WAFCON triumphs in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018, further cementing their dominance in African women’s football.
