Senator George Akume Resigns as Secretary to the Government of the Federation

Senator George Akume has tendered his resignation as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
Sources within the Presidency confirmed that Akume submitted his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu . While the details surrounding his decision remain unclear, insiders suggest it may be connected to recent high-level consultations over the administration’s policy direction.
Akume, a former Governor of Benue State and one-time Minority Leader of the Senate, was appointed SGF in June 2023. During his tenure, he coordinated inter-ministerial activities and played a central role in implementing federal executive decisions.
As of press time, the Presidency has yet to issue an official statement regarding his departure or announce a replacement.
Akume’s resignation marks the first major exit from President Tinubu’s cabinet since its inauguration. Political observers are watching closely to see how the development may affect the balance of power within the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
Further updates are expected as official channels provide clarification on the circumstances and implications of the resignation.
