Sadiq Khan Visits Nigeria in First Official Africa Trip as London Mayor

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has arrived in Nigeria for his first official visit to Africa since assuming office, marking a significant step in fostering stronger ties between London and key African cities.
Khan is leading a powerful delegation of 26 unicorn companies from the UK—startups valued at over $1 billion—on a mission to deepen business and investment connections with Nigerian enterprises.
During his time in Lagos, the mayor praised the city’s vibrant culture, describing both Lagos and London as global powerhouses of creativity and innovation. While touring the renowned Nike Art Gallery, Khan acknowledged the role such institutions play in preserving Nigeria’s cultural legacy and empowering young talents in the creative industry.
He also spoke of the need for stronger collaboration between London and Lagos, highlighting how joint efforts can drive future development in technology, the arts, and commerce.
On a more somber note, Khan expressed sadness over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. He extended his condolences to Buhari’s family and to the people of Nigeria, noting the profound loss the nation has suffered.
President Buhari died at The London Clinic on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a prolonged illness. His remains were flown back to Nigeria on Tuesday and laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
