Reno’s Reversal : How A Vocal Critics Became a Tinubu Cheerleader

Reno Omokri, a well-known social commentator (Tinubu Cheerleader) and former aide to Nigeria’s ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has built a reputation for his outspoken political views, often attracting both praise and criticism.
Renowned for his sharp critiques of figures like Bola Ahmed Tinubu, his recent perceived shift in alignment with Tinubu has ignited widespread debate.
This apparent reversal, whether intentional or sincere, has left many observers questioning the dynamics of political loyalty, pragmatism, and personal ambition.
At the Presidential election held in 2023, one of the loudest voices against the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Tinubu, was Reno Omokri who was known for using his social media presence and international platform to criticize the government and those he felt were detrimental to Nigeria’s future. His activism was vocal, relentless, and, in the eyes of many, genuine, until now.

In 2022, Omokri famously led protests at Chatham House in the United Kingdom mocking and openly deriding Bola Tinubu, the presidential hopeful at the time. His protest symbolized a moment of defiance, supposedly rooted in a desire for good governance and accountability. To many, it appeared as though Omokri was positioning himself as a champion of the people, standing firm against what he believed to be impending leadership that could not serve Nigeria well.
Reno’s perceived reversal has drawn mixed reactions. Reports and critics accuse him of opportunism and hypocrisy, suggesting that his outspokenness was never rooted in principle but in political convenience. Others defend Reno, arguing that political actors and commentators are allowed to evolve in their views as circumstances change
However, fast forward to today, and the once fiery critic of Tinubu has had a change of heart. Reno Omokri, the same man who led the protest and sought to humiliate Tinubu on foreign soil, was recently seen visiting the presidential villa, meeting the same man he once vehemently opposed. This sudden and drastic shift in tone and behavior raises serious questions about the true nature of Omokri’s activism and the principles upon which it was built.

Reno Omokri’s change of tone toward Bola Ahmed Tinubu is borne out of conviction, strategy, or opportunism, it reflects the complexities of Nigeria’s political landscape. As public figures navigate these murky waters, the onus remains on citizens to critically evaluate their leaders and hold them accountable.
Reno’s reversal is a reminder that in politics, the line between principle and pragmatism is often blurred and the true motives behind such shifts may never be fully revealed.
The real test lies in whether his new stance contributes meaningfully to Nigeria’s progress or serves as another chapter in the saga of political self-interest at first.
