New Threats To Owo Catholic Church Stir Fear, Trigger Emergency Security Summit

Suspected gunmen have reportedly issued a new threat to Saint Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State—nearly three years after a brutal attack on the same church claimed the lives of many worshippers.
The warning has reignited fear across the town, still haunted by the memory of the June 5, 2022 massacre, when armed men stormed the church during a morning Mass, killing dozens and injuring many others.
In response to the renewed threat and growing unease among residents, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye, has convened a security summit aimed at addressing the worsening insecurity in the area.
Scheduled for Monday, May 26, the summit will bring together key stakeholders to develop long-term strategies for protecting lives and property. The agenda includes fostering stronger collaboration between residents and security agencies, as well as establishing a Security Trust Fund to support ongoing safety initiatives.
Organisers of the summit say rising cases of bandit threats and kidnappings have significantly disrupted daily life and economic activities in the town.
The summit will be chaired by Justice Adesuyi Olateru-Olagbegi, with Owo Local Government Chairman Hon. Tope Omolayo serving as chief host. Pastor Olugbenga Olumolawa will chair the planning committee, while Prof. Taiwo Adenegan is expected to anchor the event.
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr. Olayide Owolabi Adelami, will be in attendance, alongside traditional leaders, security agencies, and other key stakeholders—all working toward a united front to prevent future attacks.
