Nepal’s New Interim PM to Serve for Only Six Month

Nepal’s newly appointed interim prime minister, Sushila Karki, has pledged to hold office for only six months, promising to act on protesters’ demands to “end corruption” after weeks of unrest forced her predecessor out.
Karki, 73, a former chief justice, was sworn in on Friday and immediately tasked with stabilising the country and preparing the ground for fresh elections within half a year. Her appointment follows a wave of youth-led demonstrations that erupted after a social media ban and spiralled into violent confrontations, leaving parliament and key government offices torched.
“We have to work according to the thinking of the Gen Z generation,” Karki said in her first public statement, signalling her willingness to embrace the demands of young demonstrators whose movement toppled the government.
The protests have highlighted deeper frustrations with Nepal’s economy, where unemployment remains stubbornly high. Nearly 20 percent of people aged 15 to 24 are jobless, according to World Bank data, while the country’s GDP per capita is just $1,447.
