NCDC Warns of Multiple Disease Outbreaks Across NigeriaCrime, Urges Urgent Action

The Federal Government has issued a nationwide health alert, warning of multiple infectious disease outbreaks currently spreading across the country.

In a statement released Friday via its official website, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed ongoing outbreaks of cholera, dengue fever, Mpox, diphtheria, and yellow fever in several states.

“The situation demands heightened vigilance and intensified response efforts from all stakeholders,” the NCDC stated, warning that the health risks posed by these outbreaks were severe and required immediate national attention.

According to the agency, suspected cholera cases have now been reported in 34 states, with Zamfara State alone accounting for 32 per cent of the total as of epidemiological week 26, covering June 23 to 29, 2025. Other states with significant reports include Bayelsa, Adamawa, Delta, Lagos, and Rivers.

Cholera, caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, can lead to acute diarrhoea, severe dehydration, and death if not promptly treated.

The agency also confirmed a recent dengue fever outbreak in Edo State between June 9 and 13, following laboratory investigations. Dengue fever, like yellow fever, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and is often worsened by poor sanitation and climate-related conditions.

“Nigeria is already experiencing a rising incidence of cholera, while yellow fever and dengue fever are beginning to be detected in some states,” the NCDC said.

Yellow fever has so far been confirmed in Abia, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos, and Rivers states, with seven laboratory-confirmed cases. “The yellow fever vaccine remains the most effective prevention strategy,” the agency noted.

Meanwhile, Mpox and diphtheria continue to pose ongoing threats. Mpox presents with fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes, while diphtheria can cause severe throat infections and difficulty in breathing.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to take preventive measures seriously, including removing mosquito breeding grounds, sleeping under insecticide-treated nets, using insect repellents, maintaining proper hygiene, and avoiding self-medication.

It also cautioned that dengue and yellow fever symptoms may resemble malaria, making early testing and accurate diagnosis essential for effective treatment.
