NAFDAC DG Defends Safety of Genetically Modified Foods Amid Public Concerns

The Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has stated that genetically modified foods (GMOs) are not harmful to human health as long as they meet required safety standards.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Adeyeye addressed rising concerns surrounding the regulation and consumption of GMO products in Nigeria.
“GMOs are not bad for us,” she said. “It depends on the type of food and whether safety considerations have been met.”
She noted that the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) is primarily responsible for assessing the safety of GMO foods, while NAFDAC ensures quality and collaborates closely with the agency through a memorandum of understanding.
“We cannot give approval until the biosafety agency certifies that they’ve done due diligence, whether through lab testing or desk review,” she explained.
Describing herself as a “food freak,” Adeyeye advised Nigerians to always check labels for GMO information and reassured the public that only thoroughly vetted products are approved for consumption.
“Our goal at NAFDAC is to ensure that food products on the market are safe, of good quality, and effective,” she added.
Her comments come amid growing debate across the country, with some Nigerians calling for increased transparency and clearer labeling of GMO products, while others voice concerns about long-term health impacts.
