MovieBox.ng Suspended Over Piracy — NCC

The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has taken down MovieBox.ng, a website notorious for streaming pirated movies, music, and live sports. The suspension, which took effect on July 20, 2025, was achieved in collaboration with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).
In a statement issued Thursday in Abuja, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ijeoma Egbunike, confirmed that Director-General Dr. John Asein disclosed the development as part of the commission’s intensified crackdown on digital piracy.
Asein explained that MovieBox.ng operated as part of a larger network exploiting mirror and fallback domains to distribute unauthorised content.
“They use multiple mirror domains to access and promote pirated content, with domain histories linked to known piracy operations,” he said.
He praised NiRA’s swift intervention and called on internet service providers and other online intermediaries to act quickly on takedown notices, as mandated by the Copyright Act, 2022.
The DG also revealed that efforts were underway to dismantle additional mirror sites linked to MovieBox.ng.
The NCC further cautioned the public against using illegal streaming platforms, warning that they not only violate copyright laws but also expose users to malware, identity theft, and financial fraud.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspension is part of the commission’s broader “Stand Together Against Online Piracy (STOP)” campaign, launched earlier this year.
