The convoy of former Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, came under attack on Monday in Birnin Kebbi, with suspected thugs allegedly targeting his supporters and vehicles.

Malami, who is now a leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the state, had visited the capital to pay condolences. Witnesses confirmed that about 10 vehicles were damaged in the incident, while several supporters sustained injuries.

Reacting after the attack, Malami distanced his visit from politics, insisting he was not on a campaign tour.

“It’s a painful act clearly linked to politics. Some thugs came out from the APC state headquarters armed with dangerous weapons and stones, attacking and destroying our convoy,” he alleged.

He added, “The truth is, when it comes to politics in Kebbi State there is no retreat, no surrender.”

But the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi swiftly denied any role in the violence. Its State Publicity Secretary, Isa Assalafy, not only condemned the attack but also dismissed claims that the ruling party would instigate unrest.

“Kebbi is a peaceful state. No government that enjoys massive support from the people and is confident of victory in 2027 would want the peace of the state to be disrupted,” Assalafy said.

However, Assalafy went further, accusing security operatives in Malami’s convoy of escalating the situation by firing shots during the clash.
