Lagos NYSC Corps Members Embrace Yoruba Lessons for Cultural Integration

NYSC Lagos Yoruba Language tutor, Mrs Beatrice Fayinto, has taught 2023 Batch “C” Stream II corps members at the NYSC Lagos orientation camp in Iyana-Ipaja, how to communicate in basic Yoruba language.
She explained that Yoruba is the language of the indigenous people of South-Western Nigeria, where Lagos is situated, which makes it the most widely spoken language in the State.

According to her, corps members from other parts of the country, coming to Lagos and experiencing another culture and language entirely different from theirs, might find it difficult to adapt, hence, the relevance of the lecture.
During the lecture, she taught corps members simple communication in Yoruba, such as; salutations, numeracy, the days of the week, months of the year, and parts of the body.
Mrs. Fayinto also stressed the need for Lagos corps members from other parts of the country to learn and adhere to the customs and traditions of the Yoruba people.
Emphasizing on this further, she said this fosters cooperation and ease of communication between corps members and residents of Lagos State. She added that it also helps to reduce the chances of conflict and enables them to bargain with traders in the market.
