Lady Laments Sudden 50% Rent increase from N1.2m to N1.8m

A Nigerian woman known as Pinkie Barbie has gone viral on social media after publicly expressing her frustration over a steep and sudden increase in her rent.
In a widely circulated video, Pinkie recounted returning home from the market only to discover a letter from her landlord’s legal representatives informing her of a rent hike. According to the notice, her rent was raised from ₦1 million to ₦1.8 million—a staggering 80% increase.
However, Pinkie disputed the figures in the letter, stating that she had been paying ₦1.2 million, not ₦1 million. She questioned the rationale behind such a sharp increase.
“So, they have increased my rent today. I just got back from the market and received this letter. They’ve raised my rent from ₦1.2 million to ₦1.8 million. Isn’t that too much?” she asked in the video.
Clearly distressed, she highlighted the broader struggles faced by many Nigerians amid rising living costs and a challenging economy.
“Nigeria is already hard enough, and people are just trying to survive. What’s happening, landlord? Is this not too much?” she said.
Pinkie also noted that the rent hike came without any upgrades or renovations to the property, implying that there was no valid reason for such a dramatic increase.
“People are already struggling to make ends meet. Nobody is considering anybody anymore. Everybody just wants to kill everybody,” she lamented.
