IGP Orders Maximum Security for Retired Police Officers’ Nationwide Protest

This was made known in a statement issued on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who also addressed the spread of false information surrounding the protest.
“The IGP has ordered that the rights of our retired officers who have chosen to protest must be protected, and the protest should serve as a model of dignified expression of grievance,” Adejobi stated.
He expressed concern that some individuals were intentionally misrepresenting facts to discredit the Federal Government and malign the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Adejobi, the demand by retired officers to exit the Contributory Pension Scheme is not a recent agitation, and previous Inspectors-General had supported the cause. However, he noted that legal restrictions, complex agency interactions, and financial limitations have stalled its resolution.
“It is disheartening to observe how certain actors have chosen to politicise a sensitive welfare issue, weaponising the legitimate grievances of our retired colleagues for ulterior motives,” he added.
Egbetokun has instructed all state commands and the FCT to facilitate the peaceful conduct of the protest and to prevent any potential hijack by political elements or other agitators. He also ordered that police personnel be briefed on the right to peaceful assembly and show utmost respect to the retirees during the demonstrations.
He emphasized the importance of deploying both intelligence and operational resources to maintain public order, protect lives and property, and uphold the dignity of the Nigeria Police.
Adejobi concluded by calling on the protesting officers to ensure that their demonstration remains peaceful.
