FCT Police Arrest Man Over Death of 3-Year-Old in Uncovered Septic Tank

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a man identified as Philip Jallo over the tragic death of a three-year-old boy who drowned in an uncovered septic tank in Durumi 2, Abuja.
According to a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, July 16, 2025, around 9:00 p.m. Preliminary investigations revealed that the uncovered soakaway had long posed a danger to residents of the area, with several neighbours reportedly appealing to the suspect to seal it—but their warnings went unheeded.
The young victim was said to be playing within the residential compound when he accidentally slipped and fell into the exposed pit filled with human waste. He was later rescued and rushed to a hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
The suspect, Philip Jallo, is currently in police custody and undergoing further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, FCT, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the child and extended his condolences to the bereaved family. He also called for increased environmental responsibility among residents.
He said, “This tragic incident could have been avoided. We must all take environmental hazards seriously. Residents must ensure their surroundings are safe, especially when it involves open pits, tanks, or exposed structures. I also urge parents and guardians to remain vigilant and closely monitor their children to prevent such heartbreaking occurrences.”
SP Josephine Adeh further reassured the public of the Command’s commitment to holding individuals accountable for negligence that endangers life.
“The FCT Police Command will not tolerate acts of gross negligence that compromise public safety. This incident serves as a painful reminder that collective responsibility and vigilance are essential in keeping our communities safe,” she stated.
The police say the investigation is ongoing and further updates will be provided in due course.
