The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Federal Capital Territory, CP Ajao S. Adewale, has cautioned traffic officers in Abuja against misconduct while unveiling a new operation aimed at tackling congestion in the city.

This was disclosed in a statement on Sunday, August 31,2025, by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh.

According to the statement, the Police Commissioner held a lecture with all Divisional Traffic Officers, Motor Traffic Police (MOTOPOL), and other traffic personnel at the Command Headquarters, where he spoke on professionalism and service culture under the theme “Humanity First.”

During the session, CP Adewale expressed displeasure with the performance of traffic officers, stressing that traffic management is one of the visible indicators of a city’s civility. He described traffic officers as the first public image of the police and warned them to uphold discipline while avoiding unethical conduct that could damage the reputation of the Force.

The statement noted that the CP had earlier toured parts of Abuja to monitor traffic flow during peak hours, identifying 30 critical congestion hotspots including Wuse, Area 1 Roundabout, Jikwoyi, Karu, Kurudu, AYA, Apo Resettlement, Gudu, Galadima, Dawaki, and Kubwa. He directed officers to ensure constant presence at these locations to keep traffic moving.

The Commissioner also instructed officers to clamp down on drivers who flout traffic laws, including those who drive against traffic or stop indiscriminately to pick and drop passengers. He condemned the practice of jumping into vehicles or attempting to seize the steering of traffic offenders, describing such actions as dangerous and unprofessional.

To strengthen enforcement, CP Adewale launched Operation “Keep Traffic Flowing” and set up a surveillance team to monitor traffic officers’ activities, warning that any officer found violating directives would be sanctioned.

The police further appealed to residents of the FCT to cooperate by obeying traffic rules, respecting officers on duty, and refraining from offering bribes.

Residents were also urged to report any suspicious activity through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938.
