Kumuyi Clarifies Deeper Life Marriage Rules, Says They Are Guidelines Not Biblical Laws

Pastor William Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has clarified that some of the church’s long-standing marriage rules are administrative guidelines, not biblical commandments.

Speaking on recent reforms, Kumuyi announced the abolition of the rule barring ladies from visiting men they intend to marry. He explained that intending couples can now visit each other during courtship as long as they are accompanied by an elder.

The cleric emphasized the need for Christians to differentiate between God’s law and church principles, noting that such rules are flexible and should not be treated as divine mandates.

“We just felt you need some time to know one another. And then we said one month will be too short, two months too short. So, why not six months? But it is not from the Bible,” Kumuyi said.

He added that timelines like six months or three months are purely administrative decisions, not scriptural requirements.

Kumuyi also pointed out that the church’s marriage committee was created to guide members, not to exercise divine authority. “There’s no marriage committee in the New Testament. We created it to help you, not because we can give you a chapter and a verse. It is church administration,” he explained.

He cautioned leaders against using church structures to wield undue authority, stressing that marriage committees must not assume powers God has not given them.
