Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have been crowned champions of the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket after overpowering Mali in the final.

The Rena Wakama-led side lifted the trophy on Sunday at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

With the victory, Nigeria became the first nation to win five straight Women’s Afrobasket titles, extending their dominance on the continent.

They also remain unbeaten in the competition for ten years — their last defeat dating back to October 2, 2015, against Cameroon.

Sunday’s final was a game of two halves. Mali edged the first quarter 26–21, but D’Tigress fought back to tie the game 41–41 at halftime.

A resurgent third quarter saw Nigeria take control, finishing the period 61–56 ahead.

In the final quarter, Wakama’s side tightened their defence, restricting Mali to just eight points to secure a 14-point win.

The triumph comes after a tense semi-final win over Senegal, where D’Tigress needed a late surge in the closing minutes to reach the final.

For Wakama, it marks back-to-back titles in two campaigns, having made history in 2023 as the first woman to coach a team to Afrobasket glory.
