Tension gripped Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Saturday as angry youths staged a protest over the recent massacre in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area.

The protesters, visibly enraged by the killings of over 200 people by suspected armed herdsmen, blocked the busy Wurukum Roundabout, disrupting vehicular movement and leaving many commuters stranded for hours.

Chanting solidarity songs and holding placards demanding justice, the youths decried the government’s failure to protect vulnerable communities across Benue. They insisted that enough is enough and vowed not to leave the streets until authorities took decisive action.

The protest caused a major gridlock on roads linking the North and South, paralyzing business and transport activities within the state capital.

Many of the protesters blamed both state and federal governments for what they described as long-standing silence and inaction in the face of repeated attacks by armed invaders in rural communities.

Security operatives were later deployed to the area to prevent the protest from escalating into violence, but the demonstrators remained defiant, urging the government to prioritize the safety of citizens and bring the perpetrators of the Yelewata killings to justice.
