Bill Gates Pledges Bulk of $200 Billion Fortune to Africa’s Future

Bill Gates has announced a historic pledge to donate the majority of his estimated $200 billion fortune over the next 20 years to initiatives focused on Africa’s development.
Speaking at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gates said the funding will be directed toward improving healthcare, education, and economic growth across the continent. “If governments prioritize the well-being of their people, philanthropists like me can be effective partners,” he stated.
The donation will be managed through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which plans to fully disburse its endowment by December 31, 2045—after which the foundation will close. This “sunset model” marks a shift from the traditional perpetual approach to philanthropy, emphasizing immediate and impactful change within a specific timeframe.
Gates’s commitment highlights a long-term dedication to tackling Africa’s most urgent challenges and empowering its future through innovation and partnership.
