A retired deputy superintendent of police,Mr Ofem Usani Leko has delivered a lecture on “Security Awareness” to the 2024 Batch B Stream 2 corps members at the Orientation Camp, Iyana-Ipaja.
The retired police officer stressed that security awareness begins with being mindful of one’s surroundings, noting that individuals must be sensitive to their environment, even in the comfort of their own homes.
He said security awareness is all about being able to notice discrepancies in the situations of our surroundings, noticing people who behave strangely or otherwise or other things that are unusualy different.
He noted that people must be informed of the things around them.”To be security conscious, you must be 24 hours at alert.” Speaking further, he advised Corps members to always have a plan ahead of anything they want to do or execute. He equally charged them to live a simple life, be of good conduct and avoid distractions.
Speaking on the benefits of security awareness, he highlighted several key advantages. These include cultivating a security-conscious culture, being informed and empowering employees or students, protecting assets, saving time and money, and ensuring compliance.
“When security and counter measures are put in place and compliance is adhered to, a secured environment will be achieved,” he said.
Mr. Leko cautioned corps members to always exercise restraint when encountering individuals claiming to be security officers. He said there are some who are not who they claimed to be but wearing police uniform while on the other hand some are genuine officers. He warned them against challenging officers at a check point if they are lawfully doing their job.
He also emphasized the importance of refusing to give bribes to security officials. He explained that if no one gives bribes officers will be less likely to ask for them in the future.
