Awujale of Ijebuland Laid to Rest in Ijebu Ode

The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has been buried at his private residence in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, following traditional rites that marked the end of an extraordinary reign.
The revered monarch, who passed away at the age of 91, was laid to rest on Monday in a solemn ceremony witnessed by dignitaries, members of the royal family, and high-ranking chiefs of the Ijebu Traditional Council.
Oba Adetona’s burial drew a distinguished gathering, including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, former Governor Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote, and legendary Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960 at the age of 26, reigned for more than six decades, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers. His passing marks the end of a remarkable era in Ijebu history—one defined by courage, modern leadership, and a deep-rooted commitment to justice and the preservation of Yoruba heritage.
Though the final burial rites were conducted with strict adherence to cultural customs and away from public view, the town of Ijebu Ode came alive with emotion as hundreds of Ijebu indigenes gathered across various quarters to honour a monarch many described as “fearless,” “principled,” and “a beacon of integrity.”
Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona received his education both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He became Awujale during a pivotal moment in the country’s history and went on to leave a legacy admired across generations.
