Anambra Police Commend Brave Citizen for Filming Kidnap Incident in Awka

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has praised the bravery of an unidentified man who recorded a viral video capturing a broad-daylight kidnap operation in Awka on Friday morning.
The footage shows the moment the kidnappers, using a silver Toyota Highlander, forced their victim into the vehicle before firing shots into the air to create panic. The video also documented the chaos that ensued, with motorists screeching to a halt to avoid stray bullets and pedestrians fleeing for safety.
According to eyewitnesses, the abducted man was returning home after dropping his children at school when the attack occurred.
In a statement issued by the Anambra State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command said the video is already proving instrumental in efforts to track down the three-man armed gang and rescue the victim.
“The men, who operated in a stainless-coloured Highlander without a number plate, shot indiscriminately and abducted an unsuspecting victim in the early hours of 27th June 2025 at Awka,” the statement said.
CP Orutugu commended the citizen’s courage, noting that the act of recording such dangerous criminal activity demonstrates the critical role the public can play in supporting law enforcement.
“The video is aiding the rescue operations and potentially helping to save the kidnapped victim,” the Commissioner stated.
The command pledged to leverage the footage to identify the perpetrators, gather evidence, and bring those responsible to justice.
