Akpabio Denies Approval of New States, Warns Against Misinformation

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed viral social media reports claiming that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states in Nigeria.

Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary session, Akpabio responded to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), who sought clarification amid growing speculation and misinformation.

Akpabio clarified that while over 42 proposals for new states had been submitted to the Constitution Review Committee, none had progressed beyond the preliminary stage.

“There have been over 42 proposals,” he said, “but not one has gone through full deliberation. The process of creating a state is very rigorous and has not been completed in any instance.”

He explained that state creation involves several constitutional hurdles, including legislative approval, a referendum, and presidential assent—none of which have been fulfilled for any of the proposals.

“No new state has been approved by the Senate,” Akpabio stressed. “It is premature and misleading for anyone to act otherwise.”

He also cautioned communities and advocacy groups against organizing meetings or campaigns around proposed states that have not been officially recognized.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to rely solely on official communication from the National Assembly, warning against the spread of falsehoods online.
