Aiyedatiwa Frees 40 Prison Inmates in Celebration of 60th Birthday

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa marked his 60th birthday on January 12, 2025, with a remarkable gesture of mercy, releasing 40 prison inmates across the state.
The release, announced by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, included the outright freedom of 15 inmates, the commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment, and significant reductions in other sentences.
Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the Attorney General and head of the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, stated that the decision followed a rigorous review process. Factors such as age, health, behavior, and time served were considered.
Governor Aiyedatiwa’s act of clemency is grounded in Section 212 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution. The council collaborated with legal experts, correctional authorities, and community leaders to ensure fairness and justice in the process.
In a statement, the governor explained that this decision conforms with his administration’s goal to humanize the justice system. It was also a solemn moment as the governor forwent celebrations to honor the late Secretary to the State Government, Tayo Oluwatuyi.
President Bola Tinubu also extended warm wishes to the governor, commending his commitment to political ideals and grassroots development. He acknowledged Aiyedatiwa’s contributions to the health and education sectors, which have positively impacted Ondo State.
