“You United a People” – Political Analyst Pays Tribute to Late Father

Political analyst and public affairs commentator, Nwede Chinonso, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late father, Chief Boniface Iduma Nwede (popularly known as Ichie Gburugburu na Onitsha Ado), on the anniversary of his burial, marking 29 years since the elder statesman was laid to rest.
Chief Nwede, who until his death on August 8, 1996, was the General Manager of Ekenedirichukwu Motors Nig. Ltd, Anambra State, passed away under what his family described as “a manipulated illness” at St. Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital. He was buried on August 13, 1996, in Okposhi Eheku, Ebonyi State.
In an emotional statement, Chinonso reflected on the enduring legacy of his father, describing him as “a man of peace, generosity, and leadership whose influence is still felt across our family and community.”
“Though years have passed since you left us, your legacy lives on in our hearts, memories, and the pain of your departure still etches the heart and weakens the alimentary canal,” Chinonso expressed.
He recalled the late Chief Nwede’s passion for community development, notably through the establishment of AYO—a sociocultural organisation aimed at uniting people in Anambra State through the promotion of peace, unity, and progressive values.
“Your kindness, generosity, and unwavering support to family, friends and the Okposhi Eheku community are still spoken of with emotion. Your death was not only a loss to our family but a tragic blow to our people,” Chinonso said.
The statement further highlighted the late Chief’s distinguished roles as a Senior Prefect at St. Andian’s Secondary School, Umuezeoka, and as one of the most influential figures in his community. Known for his philanthropy and leadership, Chief Nwede is fondly remembered by those who knew him, many of whom continue to break down in tears at the mention of his name.
“Your deeds while on earth have continued to be a reference point. The void created by your demise is yet to be filled. I miss you, Dad,” Chinonso concluded.
Chief Boniface Iduma Nwede’s memory continues to be honoured not just by his immediate family, but by all who were touched by his leadership and compassion. His son, Chinonso, has vowed to continue upholding the values he lived for, in both private life and public advocacy.
