Yelwata IDPs Shut Down Highway, Demand Return to Ancestral Homes

Internally Displaced Persons from the mega camp in Benue State took over the Makurdi/Lafia Federal Highway preventing vehicles from moving in or out of the state.
While calling for calm, State Governor Hyacinth Alia reassured them that his administration is committed to reaching out to the displaced and their return to their ancestral homes.
Barely 24 hours after the visit of the Wife of the President Oluremi Tinubu to Benue State where she made substantial donations, displaced persons from June’s devastating Yelwata attack, the IDPS took over the highway chanting in unison: “We want to go back home!”.
The blockade which lasted several hours left hundreds of motorists and commuters totally stranded.but security on ground to ensure the demonstration did not get out of control.
Reacting to the development, State Governor Hyacinth Alia reassured the displaced that what is theirs must go to them.
He sets the records straight regarding the intended beneficiaries of the President’s wife’s donation.
It’s been over 6 weeks since the dreadful attack on the community which claimed hundreds, left countless scared and traumatised yet the uncertainty still persists.
