Viral Video Shows Northern Youths Celebrating Death of Buhari, Sparks Online Reactions

A viral video circulating on social media has captured scenes of celebration among some Northerners following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari passed away on Sunday at a clinic in London, United Kingdom. His death was officially confirmed by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a post shared on X.
However, rather than widespread mourning, the reaction in parts of the country—particularly the North—has been marked by unexpected jubilation, as seen in videos now trending online.
An X user, @Salako, shared one of the clips and noted the striking absence of similar reactions from the South, East, or West.
“It is only on social media that Buhari is resting in peace,” Salako wrote. “As of now, we’ve not seen any celebratory videos from the South, East or West, but there’s widespread celebration in the North.”
Salako added that no one should be guilt-tripped into mourning a leader who, in their view, failed to improve lives during his time in office. “You cannot gaslight people into mourning,” he said.
The video and comments have triggered debate online, with users divided over whether the celebrations are a reflection of public frustration with Buhari’s legacy or a display of poor national decorum during a moment of mourning.
