Victor Boniface Announces Shock Retirement From International Football

Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has stunned fans by announcing his retirement from international football. The 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen forward made the announcement on Thursday via his official Instagram page.
In his heartfelt message, Boniface wrote:
“Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment — the good and the bad. Thanks a lot, thank you all. I don hang boot.”
The phrase “I don hang boot” is Nigerian Pidgin for “I’ve retired,” signaling the end of his time with the Super Eagles.

Boniface’s decision comes shortly after Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Russia, a match in which he started but failed to score. He was substituted in the second half, and his replacement, Tolu Arokodare, netted the equalizer. Boniface has earned 13 caps since making his debut in 2023 but is yet to score for the national team.
His unexpected retirement has sparked a wave of reactions, with many wondering if the decision was made in frustration or if it marks a permanent exit from the national team. As of now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has not issued an official statement.
Boniface, who played a key role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga-winning season, remains active at club level and is expected to continue shining in European competitions.
