The United States government has committed $32.5 million in humanitarian assistance to Nigeria through the World Food Programme (WFP), targeting the country’s worsening hunger crisis, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

According to the WFP, the funds will provide food and nutritional support to more than 764,000 vulnerable people across Nigeria’s Northeast and Northwest. Beneficiaries include over 41,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women and girls, as well as more than 43,000 children, who will receive specialized nutrition support through electronic food vouchers.

The aid comes at a critical time, as millions face severe food insecurity due to conflict, displacement, and recent funding cuts that forced the closure of vital nutrition centres in Borno State.

US officials said the assistance reflects Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Nigeria in addressing hunger and malnutrition, while WFP noted that the intervention would help prevent further deterioration of living conditions in affected communities.

The latest pledge underscores the growing urgency to scale up resources to tackle hunger across Nigeria’s crisis-hit regions.
