US Embassy in Abuja, Lagos Consulate to Close September 1 for Labour Day

The United States Mission in Nigeria has announced that both the US Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will not open on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labour Day.

In a statement posted on its X account Sunday morning, the Mission confirmed: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of the U.S. Labour Day.”

Labour Day, which has been observed since 1882 when Matthew Maguire first proposed it, is dedicated to honouring the contributions of American workers.

The Mission clarified that while essential services would still be available through emergency contact channels, all routine consular services would only resume after the holiday. Nigerians planning to apply for visas or seek consular assistance were advised to take note of the closure.

Labour Day in the United States is a federal holiday observed annually on the first Monday of September.
