UNIZIK Student Dies After Jumping from Three-Storey Building

A tragic incident has shaken the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka community, as a male student reportedly lost his life after jumping from a three-storey off-campus building.
The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, June 5, at a student lodge located near the university campus. According to eyewitnesses, a loud noise drew attention to the scene, where the student was found lying in a pool of blood after plunging from the building’s balcony.
The student was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital but was confirmed dead upon arrival.
Sources within the lodge told reporters that the deceased had allegedly consumed a substance commonly referred to as “colos,” believed to be a psychoactive drug. It was reportedly given to him by another resident of the building.
A video circulating online shows a tense confrontation at the scene, with students confronting the individual alleged to have supplied the substance. In the footage, the accused—who also appeared to be under the influence—was unable to defend himself against the accusations that he watched passively while the tragic event unfolded.
The suspect, believed to be the victim’s roommate, is currently in police custody. Authorities say he will be further interrogated once he is fully sober and able to respond to questioning.
UNIZIK authorities and local law enforcement have yet to release an official statement as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
