Tottenham Sack Ange Postecoglou Despite Historic Europa League Triumph

Tottenham Hotspur have officially sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou, just over two weeks after he led the club to a dramatic 1–0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final—Spurs’ first European trophy in 41 years and their first major silverware since 2008.
Despite the historic win, the club endured a disastrous Premier League campaign in 2024–25, finishing 17th with only 38 points—their lowest-ever tally in the Premier League era. Tottenham also suffered 22 defeats, a record number for a team that avoided relegation.
Postecoglou, who took over in 2023 following a successful run at Celtic, impressed in his debut season by securing a fifth-place finish despite the departure of Harry Kane and several key injuries. However, his second season was marred by an injury crisis and heavy criticism over his unrelenting attacking style, which many felt left the team too exposed defensively.
The decision to terminate his contract is expected to cost Tottenham around £6.5 million in compensation, as Postecoglou still had two years remaining on his deal.
Club chairman Daniel Levy is now in search of Tottenham’s fifth permanent manager in under six years. Brentford boss Thomas Frank has emerged as a leading candidate, owing to his strong relationship with Spurs’ technical director Johan Lange. Fulham’s Marco Silva, however, is reportedly not in the running, having reaffirmed his commitment to his current club.
While his time in North London ended in disappointment, Postecoglou will be remembered for breaking the club’s long trophy drought and delivering a memorable night of European glory.
