President Bola Tinubu on Thursday held a closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Amaewhule, and other lawmakers from the state as part of renewed efforts to resolve the prolonged political crisis in Rivers.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marked the first public appearance of Governor Fubara with President Tinubu since the president declared a state of emergency in Rivers on March 18.

At the time, Tinubu had suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the state assembly, citing their inability to cooperate and worsening security challenges in the state.

Thursday’s gathering, however, appears to be a major step toward reconciliation. Photographs released after the meeting showed Tinubu, Fubara, and Wike smiling and posing together.

Presidency sources said the discussions helped ease tensions and brought the feuding parties closer to resolving the dispute that has hampered governance in the oil-rich state.
