Tinubu lauds NASS approval of State of Emergency in Rivers

President Bola Tinubu has commended the National Assembly for its decisive and patriotic ratification of the State of Emergency proclamation in Rivers State, calling it a critical step towards restoring stability following a prolonged political crisis.
In a statement issued by the presidency, Tinubu emphasized that the National Assembly’s approval underscores its commitment to national security and economic stability, after 15 months of governance paralysis in the oil-rich state.
He commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other lawmakers for setting aside partisan interests in favor of the security and welfare of Rivers State residents.
The President further acknowledged the lawmakers’ thorough review of classified security briefings, which highlighted the urgent need for intervention to avert further escalation.
“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy, as well as the significant progress we have made since our administration commenced in May 2023,” Tinubu stated.
He stressed that the near-collapse of governance, threats to federal assets, and the risk of widespread violence left his administration with no choice but to declare a state of emergency.
“This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability,” the President added.
The six-month state of emergency will empower the newly-appointed Sole Administrator to restore order, address governance breakdowns, and facilitate dialogue among conflicting parties in Rivers State.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to strengthening collaboration with the National Assembly, Tinubu stated that the decision reflects unity of purpose in leadership and a collective dedication to national progress.
“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity and patriotism guide our leaders’ actions. We remain steadfast in building a safer and more prosperous Nigeria, where every citizen’s potential is safeguarded and nurtured,” he concluded.
The President also expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their support and urged all stakeholders to back efforts to restore peace and stability in Rivers State.
