President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s planned national broadcast for Democracy Day on Wednesday, June 12, has been cancelled. This was disclosed in a statement by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations, on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the change is due to President Tinubu’s scheduled appearance at the National Assembly joint session on Thursday. Instead of delivering a national address via broadcast at 7:00 a.m. as initially planned, the President will now speak from the National Assembly chambers.

“Due to H.E President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled. The President will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” the statement confirmed.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day also released an update through Abdulhakeem Adeoye, noting that the President’s Democracy Day speech will be delivered during the joint session at noon. He added that there will be no parade to mark the occasion this year.

Later in the day, a public lecture will be held at 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. The theme of the lecture is: “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms.”

This year marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria, following the return to civilian rule in 1999. Democracy Day, originally celebrated on May 29, was officially moved to June 12 by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 to honor the late MKO Abiola and the annulled 1993 presidential election widely considered Nigeria’s fairest and freest.
