Three-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos, Rescue Operations Underway

A three-storey building under construction came crashing down on Friday night, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The collapse happened around 8:30 pm, leaving several people trapped beneath the rubble.
“While eyewitness accounts vary, with some saying six people were trapped and others reporting five, emergency responders have so far rescued four adult males alive and taken them to the hospital for treatment,” NEMA revealed in a statement posted on its official X handle on Saturday.
Rescue workers from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other first responders rushed to the scene and immediately began search-and-rescue efforts.
The agency noted that the number of victims still buried has not yet been confirmed. “Emergency officials have cordoned off the site to ensure safety and smooth rescue operations. The search and rescue operation is continuing into the night, with responders assuring that no effort will be spared to save lives,” it said.
Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, often blamed on poor construction practices, the use of substandard materials, and weak enforcement of safety regulations.
Data from civil society groups and the Lagos State government highlight dozens of such incidents each year, leaving scores of casualties and displaced residents. Authorities in the state have repeatedly cautioned developers against unsafe building practices, sealing several structures found to be non-compliant in the past.
