Taribo West Slams NFF And Lagos FA Over Neglect Of Late Peter Rufai’s Family

Former Super Eagles defender Taribo West has spoken out about the treatment of his late teammate, goalkeeper Peter Rufai, expressing deep sorrow and frustration over the lack of support from Nigerian football authorities.

Speaking at Rufai’s service of songs in Lagos, West described the situation as “disheartening,” revealing that Rufai’s family had to solicit funds online to cover burial expenses. He criticised both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the Lagos State Football Association for failing to assist the family during their time of need.

Visibly emotional, West said, “My mother passed on, I never shed tears. My father passed on in my hands, I never shed tears. When Rufai passed, I had goose pimples on my body, and tears were rolling down my cheeks.”

He also lamented the broader neglect of Nigerian football legends, mentioning figures like Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha, and warned that such treatment could discourage the next generation from pursuing careers in Nigerian football. “I’ll never advise my son to put his feet for this country,” he said.

West’s comments have renewed calls for better support and recognition of former players who have contributed to Nigerian football, while the NFF has yet to respond to his allegations.
