Sultan of Sokoto Declares May 28 as Start of Zulhijja, Eid al-Adha to Hold on June 6

The Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Wednesday, May 28, 2025, as the first day of Zulhijja 1446 AH.
This declaration follows the confirmed sighting of the new moon in several parts of the country and signals the start of one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar, culminating in the Eid al-Adha celebration on Friday, June 6, 2025.
In his announcement, the Sultan emphasized the spiritual importance of the season, calling on Muslims across the nation to strengthen their devotion through acts of worship, sacrifice, and compassion, especially towards the less privileged. He urged the faithful to draw inspiration from the life of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), whose legacy defines the essence of Eid al-Adha.
His Eminence also stressed the need for unity, peace, and national cohesion during this period. He called on Muslims to offer prayers for Nigeria’s progress and stability, noting that the country’s socio-economic challenges require both spiritual and moral commitment.
Furthermore, the Sultan appealed to Islamic scholars and community leaders to use the season to promote messages of tolerance, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians, regardless of religious or ethnic background.
Widely regarded as a symbol of unity and moderation, His Eminence continues to play a pivotal role in guiding the Muslim Ummah, especially during sacred periods such as Zulhijja. His leadership remains instrumental in fostering peace and spiritual renewal across the nation.
