Speaker Abuja Municipal Area Council Impeached

The speaker, Abuja Municipal Area Council Matthew Yare of the People’s Democratic Party PDP has been impeached .

He was impeached by the eight members from the All progressives Congress APC in the council’s legislative chamber.

The members also elected Jankaro Ibrahim, member representing Kabusa ward as the new speaker.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, which commands the majority in the Council, drove the leadership change, displacing the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Council insiders disclosed that the impeachment motion secured wide support from APC councillors, paving the way for Ibrahim’s emergence.

The members who are representatives of eight out of the twelve political wards in the council are currently in the ruling All Progressives Congress, the APC.

The members say the impeachment became necessary as they are now the majority in the legislative arm of the council.

This followed the motion by Mathias Aliu of Wuse ward  and seconded by Chidawa of Karshi ward in the legislative council.

The new speaker, Jankaro Ibrahim said the former speaker is of the minority party hence the need for the change of leadership.

In a telephone interview with the immediate speaker, Matthew Yare said the action of the members was a display of ignorance of the extant laws governing the AMAC legislative council and he will speak when it becomes necessary.

Recall that the number of APC councilors in the Abuja Municipal Area Council increased to 8 after the official decamping of the executive chairman of Council Christopher Maikalangu from the people’s Democratic party to the All progressives Congress APC where he is currently the party’s chairmanship candidate for the 2026 FCT Area Council elections.
