The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has sensitized members of the 2025 Batch B Stream 1 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation programme on the critical importance of product standards and quality assurance to national development.

Representing the Director General of SON, Mr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso, the Deputy Director, Mr. Saidu Yakubu, highlighted the agency’s core responsibilities, which include setting standards for products, certifying industrial goods, and ensuring that both imported and locally manufactured items meet the required specifications.

Speaking during the orientation exercise, Mr. Yakubu explained that SON, established in 1971, protects consumers through product testing, market inspections, and conformity assessments. According to him, these efforts help to eliminate substandard goods, reduce waste, enhance customer satisfaction, and promote sustainable business growth.

He emphasized the role of standards in driving economic development and facilitating international trade, while cautioning against the risks posed by counterfeit products. Mr. Yakubu further urged corps members, particularly those participating in the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, to make quality and compliance a priority in their entrepreneurial pursuits.
