Sokoto Airstrike Tragedy: Calls for Justice, Accountability as Military and Leaders React

The recent accidental bombing in Sokoto state has sparked significant controversy, with various stakeholders demanding a thorough investigation.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has urged civilians to refrain from harboring suspected criminals, warning of severe consequences for such actions.

General Musa made these remarks during a visit to the troops of Operation Fasan Yanma at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, addressing the tragic incident on Christmas Day when an airstrike targeting Lakurawa terrorists mistakenly hit Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area. The airstrike resulted in the deaths of at least ten villagers and left many others injured.

General Musa emphasized that communities allegedly supporting criminals could inadvertently make themselves potential targets. He stated, “Do not harbor or live with criminals, as this could make you a legitimate target.” He also assured that the military would investigate any operational errors but maintained that the blame partly lay with communities tolerating criminal elements.

Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and ex-Governor Aminu Tambuwal have all called for an impartial investigation into the incident. Governor Aliyu visited the affected communities, offering condolences and announcing a relief package of N20 million and 100 bags of food supplies for the victims’ families. He promised to work closely with the military to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.

Atiku Abubakar, in a statement, condemned the bombing as a “devastating and condemnable act,” criticizing the indiscriminate loss of innocent lives. He called for greater precision in military operations and questioned the lessons learnt from similar past incidents. Similarly, Senator Tambuwal described the airstrike as a tragic mistake and urged for meticulous planning and accountability in military operations.

The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident, describing the bomb as initially aimed at a terrorist camp but tragically landing in civilian areas. General Musa reiterated the military’s commitment to combating security threats while minimizing civilian casualties. He called for cooperation from neighboring countries, including Niger, Chad, and Benin, in addressing cross-border security challenges.
