Skype, a videocalling app has announced it will cease operations in May 2025.
It announced on X that the decision marks the end of an era for a platform that allowed users to make free voice calls via their computers globally.
”Starting in May 2025, Skype will no longer be available. Over the coming days you can sign in to Microsoft Teams Free with your Skype account to stay connected with all your chats and contacts. Thank you for being part of Skype”
First released in 2003, the app played a crucial role in popularizing the concept of free computer-to-computer calls.
In recent years, It faced intense competition from other messaging and video calling apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Zoom, and Google Meet.
Despite efforts to revamp the service, including a redesign in 2017 that drew criticism from users, Skype’s popularity continued to wane.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has not provided further comments on the closure but has expressed gratitude to the its community for their support over the years.
